Hello!  Welcome to 13 Top Tricks

Welcome to 13 Top Tricks, a bridge club built around one simple idea: bridge should be challenging, social, and fun—all at the same time.

Whether you’re new to the game, returning after time away, or a seasoned competitor looking for a well-run, respectful game, you’ll find a place here. We focus on quality games, fair directing, and a welcoming atmosphere where players of all levels can learn, improve, and enjoy themselves.

At 13 Top Tricks, we believe great bridge happens when people feel comfortable asking questions, trying new ideas, and playing their best without pressure. That’s why we offer a variety of games, lessons, and special events designed to support both growth and competition.

Most of all, this is a community. We value good sportsmanship, curiosity, and the shared enjoyment of a game that rewards both logic and partnership.

We’re glad you’re here—and we look forward to seeing you at the table.

Our Story

13 Top Tricks was founded in 2023 by Joe Grill, a long-time bridge player with a deep appreciation for both the game itself and the communities it creates. Joe has been playing bridge for over 15 years and believes that the best clubs balance strong competition with approachability, good sportsmanship, and thoughtful organization.

Joe brings a unique and highly relevant background to running a bridge club. He holds a PhD in chemistry, with professional training that emphasizes precision, fairness, and analytical problem-solving—skills that translate naturally to directing games and managing a complex operation. He is also trained in first aid, reflecting a commitment to player safety and preparedness in a community setting.

In addition, Joe has been a ACBL Tournament Director since 2015, with extensive experience directing club games, tournaments, and special events. That experience informs every aspect of how 13 Top Tricks operates—from consistent rulings and smooth game flow to clear communication and a respectful playing environment.

The club began modestly, operating out of the clubhouse in Bellevue’s Summit neighborhood.  Barbara Nist started this game after the pandemic. In those early days, the goal was simple: run a fair, well-directed game and create an environment where players felt welcome, respected, and eager to return. What started as a small operation quickly gained momentum.

In 2024, with the generous support and encouragement of Jim Aitken, 13 Top Tricks took a major step forward by moving into a dedicated commercial facility in Bellevue. Establishing a permanent home made it possible to expand dramatically—offering games every day of the week, structured classes, newcomer tournaments, and social events designed to support players at every stage of their bridge journey.  Sadly, Jim passed away in 2024.  We established the Aitken Cup to honor his memory.

Joe’s hands-on approach as both owner and director has shaped the club’s culture. He is regularly on site, listening to feedback, refining formats, and ensuring that games run smoothly, fairly, and on time. The emphasis has always been on consistency, transparency, and creating a place where players feel comfortable learning, improving, and competing.

By 2025, 13 Top Tricks had become the largest bridge club in District 19, serving players across Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. That growth reflects not just increased attendance, but a thriving, engaged community built around respect for the game and for one another.

Today, 13 Top Tricks continues to grow and evolve, guided by the same principles it was founded on: high-quality bridge, a welcoming atmosphere, and a commitment to building a club that players are proud to call their own.
